The cost of a funeral in Belgium

How much does a funeral cost in 2024? What positions are expected? How to save money?

Municipal taxes

Municipal rates vary, there is no harmony in tax levels and they are different depending on the “status” of the person. That is to say, you will not pay the same taxes if the deceased was a resident or non-resident of the municipality. From one municipality to another, the tax will also change. Thus, the taxes applied by the municipality of Gembloux are not the same as that of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. Some funeral services will indicate “provision for disbursements” on their invoice to give you an indication of these costs.

Taxes are different depending on the burial method chosen. Here are some municipal taxes requested by the city of Brussels in the event of a death:

• The tax relating to the administrative processing of declarations of any death occurring in the territory of the City of Brussels: 100.00 EUR.
• The tax for exhumations is fixed: 1,150.00 EUR for any exhumation in the ground or in a vault. The provision of a coffin is included in the price of the tax. 500.00 EUR for the exhumation of an urn in the ground or in a vault
• Burial rights tax: EUR 750.00 for each burial carried out in a 50-year concession. If the person whose mortal remains are to be buried does not have their main residence in the territory of the City of Brussels at the time of their death, the tax for burial rights is due for each burial carried out in a concession (15 years and 50 years) and the amount of the burial tax is increased by 300%.

Crematorium prices

Each crematorium offers its own price list. Here are the prices charged by the Brussels crematorium as an indication:

• Cremation of an adult with immediate delivery of ashes (weekdays): €632.36 excluding VAT
• Room rental (per 30 minutes, weekdays): €172.45 excluding VAT

Prices for funeral vehicle travel

Travel involves mileage billing linked to fuel prices and travel time (often on a flat rate basis within the same locality). A transfer between Etterbeek and Uccle will not have the same cost as a transfer from Brussels to Paris.
