How do you choose music for a funeral?

Are you organising a funeral ceremony for a loved one but don’t know what music to choose?

First of all, anything is possible. Classical music is not compulsory: Did your uncle love rock? No problem! Did your sister love salsa? Playing a piece by your sister’s favourite artist is perfectly acceptable, and will allow you to personalise the ceremony to her image.

What kind of music?

Do you have an idea of what kind of music you want, but are having trouble choosing? As well as consulting his friends and family, you can take a look at his listening history (on Spotify, YouTube, etc.). What radio did they listen to? What choice has this person made for other celebrations (birthdays, weddings, etc.)?

Then you’ll need to check with the infrastructure at the ceremony venue: you may need to provide a USB key or CD. Your A&G funeral planner is there to help you find out all the information you need, and can even download and load the songs onto the right medium.

What about live music?

Including a musician, singer or choir makes for a particularly moving tribute. It adds a whole new atmosphere to the ceremony. Choirs, violinists, saxophonists, accordionists and gospel groups are all available in Belgium. Rates are often charged by the hour. Let your funeral director know as soon as possible so that he can book the service providers and coordinate their arrival.

In your immediate circle

Do you have talent in your family? Perhaps a niece would be delighted to play a piece on her instrument: don’t forget to ask around!

“At my grandfather’s funeral, my aunt sang an a capella piece in tribute to him. That voice, which he loved listening to so much, warmed my heart. I often think back to that moment.”
